The Indian Railways has launched an extensive cleanliness campaign known as Swachhata Pakhwada, which took place from October 1 to October 15, 2024. During this initiative, the Railways covered a remarkable area of 45.20 crore square meters (452 million square meters), emphasizing the need for hygiene and sanitation across its extensive network.
The campaign involved 7,285 railway stations, 2,754 trains, and participation from 18,331 offices, reflecting a large-scale effort toward cleanliness.A series of 2,259 anti-littering drives were conducted, leading to the penalization of 12,609 individuals for littering offenses.
The drive resulted in the collection of 4,619 tons of waste, which included 710 tons of plastic waste. A total of 19,759 dustbins were installed to facilitate proper waste disposal.
Educational Initiatives:
Over 1,541 webinars and seminars were conducted to raise awareness about cleanliness, attracting participation from more than 66,000 individuals.The campaign featured Nukkad Nataks (street plays) in 821 locations to engage the public in cleanliness topics.
Environmental Efforts:
263,643 saplings were planted, and an initiative called ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ distributed about 2,000 saplings among railway officials.

The campaign highlighted cleanliness in various domains such as Swachh Ahar (clean food), Swachh Neer (clean water), and Swachh Prasadhan (clean sanitation), ensuring comprehensive awareness and action across these facets.This massive cleanliness drive by the Indian Railways not only reflects its commitment to sanitation but also its comprehensive strategy involving widespread participation, effective waste management, and robust educational campaigns to ensure long-term improvements in public hygiene and awareness.
