Kabir Khan on Breakthrough’s Web Show Fursat Mein Serious Baatein: ‘Women Bring Perspectives Men Often Miss

In a candid conversation on the web show Fursat Mein Serious Baatein by Breakthrough, renowned director Kabir Khan underscored the vital need for more women across all facets of filmmaking, from direction to cinematography. Hosted by SucharitaTyagi, the discussion highlighted Kabir’s belief in the transformative impact of women’s representation in cinema, drawing from his experiences working with women in crucial roles.

“I think more representation of women in the industry will always bring a unique perspective which maybe some of us men are missing,” Kabir shared. “Not just writers, but in every area—from DOPs to costume, to sets—women bring a distinct lens that can redefine storytelling.”

Kabir reflected on his journey, observing a promising increase in women in junior roles, such as assistant directors (ADs). Where he once saw only a handful of women, Kabir now notes that 60% of his AD teams are women, a shift he believes will lead to their progression into key industry positions such as directors, editors, writers, and DOPs. This, according to Kabir, will bring “depth, sensitivity, and fresh perspectives into storytelling.”

Beyond numbers, Kabir credits his collaborative experiences with women such as Smriti Kiran, Karishma Kohli, Prarthana Goswami and Amiya Dev among others who have contributed essential insights across several projects. “These interactions have been invaluable,” he said. “They challenge me to think in new ways.”

Kabir Khan’s work, known for its real-life inspirations and social relevance, has gained global traction for challenging traditional Bollywood narratives and broadening representations on screen. As an advocate for authentic, inclusive storytelling, Kabir uses his platform to bring attention to voices often unheard in mainstream media. He sees the industry’s evolution toward gender inclusion as a crucial step in shaping cinema that resonates deeply with diverse audiences worldwide.

Kabir’s belief in storytelling that goes beyond the conventional extends to his newest projects. His recent films and documentaries prioritize resilience and real-life challenges, aiming to bridge raw authenticity with mainstream appeal. Through his dedication to centering women’s perspectives and promoting inclusive, impactful narratives, Kabir Khan envisions a future where cinema becomes a richer, more representative reflection of society.
