An initiative of the Government of India to provide affordable and eco-friendly public transport to the general public

The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) initiative, launched by the Government of India, serves as a cornerstone in the nation’s transition towards sustainable transportation. The FAME-II scheme, which commenced in April 2019, has significantly enhanced the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country. With an impressive achievement of incentivising 6.15 lakh electric vehicles, this programme not only underscores the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions but also promotes energy security through the use of cleaner technologies.

The primary objective of the FAME-II scheme is to provide financial subsidies to consumers and manufacturers of electric vehicles, thereby making them more accessible and appealing. The allocation of funds under this scheme has been strategically directed towards enhancing infrastructure, developing battery technology, and encouraging the adoption of public transport through electric buses. The notable increase in EV sales, spurred by these incentives, reflects a growing public awareness of environmental issues and a keen interest in sustainable practices.
