Seco is proud to announce a significant milestone in the health and safety performance for 2024. The company recorded a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIFR) of 1.3, surpassing the target of 1.5 and achieving the lowest TRIFR in its history. This marks a substantial improvement from the 2019 baseline of 4.7 and reaffirms the long-term commitment of Seco to achieving zero harm. By 2030, the company aims to reduce TRIFR by 80% to 0.9 or below.
“This achievement is a testament to our collective commitment to health and safety,” says Claudius Mpofu, Sustainability & EHS Coordinator. “Through continuous improvement, proactive initiatives, and a strong safety culture, we are making tangible progress toward our ambitious safety goals.”
Key initiatives driving success – Safety Week
In alignment with the International Labour Organization’s World Day for Safety, Seco dedicated an entire week to raise awareness about workplace health and safety. Employees actively participated in sharing safety success stories, addressing physical and psychological hazards, and discussing how incidents were successfully prevented.
Safety Week 2024 saw sites across Seco organizing health and safety activities, with a global theme focusing on psychological safety. Webinars covering crucial topics such as psychological safety, organizational well-being, and social work environments encouraged employees to speak up about hazards and near misses without fear of reprisal.
Increased hazard reporting
Seco has a goal of one hazard reported per employee per year. While the company made strong progress, reaching 0.88 hazard reported per employee, production units exceeded expectations with 1.06 report per employee. Enhancing hazard reporting remains a key focus area to further prevent accidents.
Sales Health & Safety Taskforce
A dedicated Sales Health & Safety Taskforce was launched to strengthen safety awareness within the Sales function, resulting in increased hazard reporting and improved safety measures.
Lost time review meetings
For every Lost Time Incident (LTI), review meetings are held with Stefan Steenstrup, President Seco, and relevant teams to identify areas for improvement. These meetings facilitate the implementation of preventive measures, reinforcing Seco’s culture of continuous safety enhancement.
Looking ahead
Seco remains committed to fostering a safe and healthy workplace. Key focus areas include further strengthening safety culture through enhanced training, learning opportunities, and proactive engagement with employees at all levels.
“We call on every employee to continue prioritizing safety and contributing to a culture where speaking up about potential risks is encouraged,” Claudius Mpofu adds. “Together, we can ensure a safer workplace for all.”
