Vice Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, AVSM, NM, took over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on January 4, 2024. As soon as he assumed charge, he laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in Delhi and paid tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the country. Before taking over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
Vice Admiral Dinesh K., an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla. Tripathi was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 July 1985. Communications and electronic warfare expert Vice Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi served on frontline warships of the Navy as Signal Communications Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer and later as Executive Officer and Principal Warfare Officer of the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mumbai. He commanded the Indian Naval ships Vinash, Kirch and Trishul. He has also held various important operational and staff appointments, including Fleet Operations Officer Western Fleet in Mumbai, Director Naval Operations, Principal Director Network Centric Operations and Principal Director Naval Planning in New Delhi. On promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral, he served as Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at NHQ and Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral in June 2019, he was appointed as the Commandant of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. He was the Director General of Naval Operations from July 2020 to May 2021. This period saw considerable naval maritime operations. He ensured that the Navy remains a 'battle-ready, credible, cohesive and future-capable force', prepared to deal with multiple complex security challenges despite the all-round gravity of the COVID pandemic. Later, from June 2021 to February 2023, he served as the Chief of Personnel.
Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi is a graduate of the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington, where he was awarded the Thimayya Medal. He completed the Naval Higher Command Course and also attended the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Islands in 2007–08, where he won the prestigious Robert E. Bateman International Award.
Vice Admiral Tripathi is a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Navy Medal for his devotion to duty. He is also a sportsman and has keen interest in tennis, badminton and cricket. Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi has been a keen student of international relations, military history and the art and science of leadership. He is married to Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, an artist and housewife. He has a son, who is a lawyer by profession, and is married to Tanya, who works in the policy making sector.
