Gevra of Chhattisgarh became Asia’s largest coal mine

Chhattisgarh-based Coal India's subsidiary South Eastern Coalfield Limited's Gevra mine is set to become Asia's largest coal mine. Environmental clearance has been granted to increase the production capacity of this mine from the present 52.5 million tonnes to 70 million tonnes per annum.

Keeping in view the role of Gevra Coal Mine as one of the mega projects of SECL in meeting the energy needs of the country, the Ministry of Coal through its herculean efforts has achieved environmental clearance of 7 crore tonnes of production in record time. This has been made possible by coordinating with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Prem Sagar Mishra, Chairman and Managing Director, SECL, said, “Under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, the Coal India team has achieved a historic achievement today (March 5, 2024). We have a vision for Gevra to become the world's largest coal mine with state-of-the-art mining operations and this is an important milestone in that journey.”

SECL Management thanked the Ministry of Coal for their support in obtaining Environmental Clearance (EC) for Gevra Mine and said that it is a historic day for SECL and Chhattisgarh will soon be home to Asia's largest coal mine. Shri Mishra expressed his gratitude to the Central and State agencies and the Government of Chhattisgarh as well as the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for their support and prompt action in granting environmental clearance.
