INS Sharda awarded ‘On the Spot Unit Citation’ for prompt response to piracy attack




Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, during his visit to Southern Naval Command, Kochi, awarded the 'On the Spot Unit Citation' to INS Sharda for successfully conducting anti-piracy operations. The ship was involved in the safe release of all 19 crew members (11 Iranians and 08 Pakistanis) of the Iranian fishing vessel Omari, which was taken hostage by pirates off the east coast of Somalia.

The ship was tasked with investigating the Iranian fishing vessel Omari which had possibly been hijacked by pirates. Based on Navy RPA surveillance information, the ship intercepted the vessel and continued a covert search throughout the night. On the morning of 02 Feb 24, the ship's vital helicopters and then the strike team were landed. The ship's aggressive posture forced the pirates to abandon the crew and boat safely. The ship's prompt and decisive action resulted in the rescue of the hijacked fishing vessel and its crew from Somali pirates. The tireless efforts of the ships and missions deployed for anti-piracy operations saved precious lives at sea in keeping with the Indian Navy's resolve to enhance the security of seafarers in the Indian Ocean region.

CNS interacted with Team Sharda and commended them for their prompt response to the piracy attack, leading to safe and successful operations at sea in challenging conditions. During his address, he appreciated the professional approach of the crew which has resulted in recognition and appreciation of the Indian Navy as the preferred security partner in the region.
